After downloading Photoshop CS3, I tried to launch it, however when I got to the System Check it said

"Installation cannot continue until the following applications are closed:

-Internet Explorer

Please close the application(s) listed above and click "Try Again" to continue the installation. Click Cancel to exit Setup."

However, all applications were closed and Internet Explorer was not up. I even tried disabling internet access and exiting my MSN instant messenger, but although I tried three times, it didn’t work. I use a Gateway laptop and this was just a trial…any ideas how to fix this? Please get back to me.

Use ctrl-alt-del to see what is actually running in the background that might be preventing the installer from running.
You can look up a process on Google if you are not sure you can shut it down.
Additionally close antiviral and firewall (except the MS firewall) programs while installing (disconnect from the internet during this if you are paranoid).

kemenyadi, and all other peoples that have problems in installation! I`m have problem "Installation cannot continue until the following applications are closed. Internet Explorer" in installation process too!
My solution this problem easy:
-1- just rename "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.ex_";
-2- stop all process "IEXPLORE.EXE" in task manager; -3- and run setup.exe installation CS3.
After installation dont forget rename "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.ex_" to "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe".
🙂
Good luck!

Found this on John Nack’s blog @

It’s for CS3 but may help with CS2.

How, not why, Dave.

You could search the hard drive for the iexplore.exe file, then f2 and call it oldiexplore.exe, for instance. Make sure when searching that you choose the option to search hidden, system, and all other types of files.
