First things first:
Go to the following link and bookmark it. Read up on Wayne Fulton’s explanation about resolution. It’s well-written and comprehensive, and it’s made the issue of resolution clear to for many of us. Scroll down and start at the "START HERE" section.

Now…
So you set your resolution to 72 ppi…should I assume you’re creating this image to ONLY be viewed online?
If yes, then look at the values for Width & Height as expressed in pixels. In almost all cases of work flow for the web you may safely ignore values expressed in any other units of measurement. You may also ignore the resolution setting, despitwe what you may be thinking right now. the ONLY size reference that matters for images to be viewed solely on a web page is absolute dimensions in pixels. If that confuses you, then I reiterate my suggestion about the ScanTips website. It will clear it all up.
Are the values for W & H in accord with the space you want to fill on screen?
If not…the easiest thing would probably be for you to start over. Create a new document at the Width & Height you desire. Start creating.
If it’s going to be for print, that opens up whole ‘nother box of bees.
