Can someone tell me if the following is possible?
I write a line of text. I would now like to select the text field to change the color of the text rather than highlighting the actual text itself. This is because highlighting the text changes the bg color to black over the text you highlight and alters the color of the text (I think it inverts it). Is this possible?

say what?

if you don’t highlight the text it won’t be active for a change in color swipe the text or doubleclick the T thumbnail
click the color box at top and choose a new color

OR
as workaround you could use effects (small f at bottom of layer palette) and put a color overlay

No need to even select the text.

As long as the type layer is designated as the active one in the Layers Palette all you have to do is change the color in the Character Palette or the Options Bar when then Type Tool is selected.

No, you can change text colour (and other options) in the character palette – and you don’t have to highlight the text(or have the Type tool selected, just have the type layer selected in layers palette.
