Paint background colour.

I was teaching a photoshop course the other day. A student was painting inside a selection, but it was the background colour that was being applied. I cannot find any option that will allow the user to do this without switching the background colour to foreground. Is this a setting somewhere or was it a bug.

You’re sure he was using the paintbrush tool and not the erase tool on the background layer?

I would say that an eraser in brush mode was used to reveal the background color. Yes, you can paint this way.
