Comp. freezes after using PS

Never used to happen before but now it happens in a matter of second when I use tools such as the eraser, clone stamp, etc. It even freeze when I save my file now and I have to restart my comp. Is it m preferences or something else. Please help its driving me nuts. By th way its old XXX Photoshop 6.0 and I use a PC

And your video card is?
And you have how much RAM?
And what have you changed recently, if anything?
And are all your drivers up to date?
