Photoshop CS being locked.

When i try to start up photoshop CS on my pc (XP) it says that photoshop has been locked please use the properties in windows explorer to unlock. What does that mean?

no idea. can you give us the exact message and how you’re trying to start it? (clicking a shortcut, double clicking an image)? is it a legal copy of ps bought from a retailer?

it says that "photoshop has been locked please use the properties in windows explorer to unlock" and then i press ok and it closes the program. Yes it is a legal copy. It is not a shortcut its the actuall exe file that is created upon installation. It has worked before it seemed to stop working overnight.

Are you sure that’s exactly the error? I’ve been a windows developer for years and never seen a problem with an exe being "locked". Is it maybe refrencing the prefrences file? Do you have write access to the Application Data directory structure where the prefs are stored? Is the prefs file itself write protected?
