I have a photo with some bad parts on the outside edges of the picture. I’d like to crop the photo using an oval, to avoid the problems. Anyone have a good suggestion on how to do this cropping?

Thanks,

Pedro

Do you mean an ellipse? Drag out the ellipse shape using the Ellipse Marquee and then hit the little mask icon at the bottom of the Layers palette. That will make a Layer Mask.

If the shape is not quite right you can unlink the mask, click on it and hit Ctrl-T for transform to resize the vertical or horizontal or both.

Look up Layer Mask in the manual.

He said crop. When you crop, you modify the physical dimensions. Simplest and fastest way I know to crop.
Even faster than the crop tool.

You can always crop in a normal way after you’ve made your settings in a non destructive way, and that way keep the original. I like the many options PS gives you to work in a non destructive way, and regret all the times I pressed delete or touched the eraser, before I knew it wasn’t necessary most of the time.

When you crop, you modify the physical dimensions.

thnx for the info

I don’t think time is an issue here.

quick definition from dictionary.com

Dict :cropped, crop·ping, crops
Dict :v. tr.
Dict :
Dict :To cut or bite off the tops or ends of: crop a hedge; sheep cropping grass. Dict :To cut (hair, for example) very short.
Dict :To clip (an animal’s ears, for example).
Dict :To trim (a photograph or picture, for example).

Obviously they’d throw a ringer in as it pertains to photographs and use trim vs cut.
I don’t really see the need for the argument other than to waste time. I’ll assume all the other methods work.

Are you a lawyer or something?
Are we talking about the words he used or the best way to solve his problem?
Hey, you win the word discussion, okay?

But your method only crops the pixels on that layer and not the canvas, so for me that would not be the way.

Okay, you got me. I just hoped nobody would notice. I lost inspiration, but couldn’t resist replying, because J. is such a replyable man.

But hey, it was just another episode of the soapie. Some sort of bad cliffhanger. J. already started a new episode. This one is dead, I guess. Unless I can provoke J. to reply.

Nah. That’s not a challenge anymore. 🙂
