path to selection question

Hi, all!

I like to create a path and then turn it into a selection and that’s generally my preferred way to remove backgrounds from images.

Lately, after I change the path to a selection, instead of the insides of the path being selected, it’s inverted. And annoying. But I have no idea what I changed to make it so.

Does anyone know where I can go to change the ‘path to selection’ default from inverse to normal?

TIA!

Mary

It’s a simple matter to inverse the selection – Shift & Command(Ctrl) + i on the keyboard will do this.

Take a bit of time to learn these keyboard shortcuts – especially toggling between the various tools – it’s surprising how much it improves your workflow.

Yes, I use keyboard commands all the time. But, I used to make the selection and hit delete. Now I have to make the selection, inverse it (however I do it) and then delete the background. Even with a keyboard command, it’s till another (annoying and unnecessary unless I can’t get help here 😉 step that I’d rather not take…

Thanks tho

You make a path and convert that into a selection, so the part you want to keep is selected.
If you want the background to be removed, you need to
inverse I would say.
Or am I missing something?

No, you’re not – but that’s exactly what my problem is – it does NOT select the area inside the path but rather everything but that! Which is not the default action. Don’t know what I did, but I wish I could take it back and make it work the way its supposed to…

And yes, I could inverse the selection everytime so it selects the area inside the path rather than everything outside it, but that’s an additional step I’d rather not take…

Any ideas?

you’ve got the tool set to "subtract from path area". it’s in the manual and help.

OK gotya
What often helps is trashing the Prefs, dunno in this case but worth a try maybe.

I’ll be darned. I’ve checked help, but focused on ‘selection’ and ‘inverse’ instead of path! I didn’t get a manual with the CS Suite – just the disks with the pdf help files (which *should* be enough). 🙂

Well, you nailed it – thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!
