I thought I was quite proficient at Photoshop, but this has made me realise my limitations! A seemingly simple problem which I’m finding impossible to fix. No laughing please!

Every time I try to move a layer, for example some text, with the arrow button, an error message reads ‘Cannot complete your request because the layer is locked.’ This effectively means that once I’ve created a layer I simply can’t change its position! I’ve tried unlocking and other obvious techniques, to no avail … so tell me … what blindingly obvious thing am I missing??

Thanks in advance for the advice.

When something like this suddenly happens to me, I usually trash the preferences file by hitting Ctrl + Alt +Space at the very beginning of starting Photoshop.

Er… Musab Unlock all the icons

The other thing to check … make sure Auto Select layer is unchecked. This is in the options bar of the move tool. It sounds to me like its auto selecting the background.

Select the move tool from the Tools Palette (you can not use the Short Cut "V"). Activate the layer in the Layers Palette and make sure there is no Lock icon at the far right.
Text layers do not autolock; one must lock them.

"Text layers do not autolock; one must lock them."

The implication is that non-text layers CAN autolock. How do you get them to do so?

Thanks all – it was the ‘Auto Select Layer’ which was the problem, so thanks Mark !
