If you registered your copy, Adobe Customer Service might be able to help you. Otherwise, I believe you are out of luck.
Gary
Shoot never did reg it, I always said later.
The number on the splash screen is not the complete serial number.
You certainly should have registered the software, but you should still give Adobe a call and see if they can help you out.
Bob
If it’s still installed, even though badly, here is registry location for serial number in 7, maybe 6 is same?

I don’t think it is installed, we wiped out the hard drive, now I’m trying to load it up again
Oh, well…number certainly would NOT be in the registry then…

I purchased PhotoShop 5.5 (with the boxed license) and installed it on my Win98 desktop. All was great for about two-three years, before a virus deleted my operating system.
During the process of restoring the operating system, I lost all my registered install information, even though they were still visible in their directories.
Now, I need to reinstall my PhotoShop, but discovered that there is a Ā½ inch crack in the CD, across the data.
What can I do to recover the CD or the install data, short of costly data recovery? I still have both license numbers (identical) and the original jacket with tutorial.
Thanks,
m harnett

m harnett, you’ll need to call adobe for replacement media. only problem is, i think they only ship current versions. if you had cracked a version 8 (CS) disk, you’d only pay for shipping. As it is, you’ll have to upgrade, I THINK. Only way to be sure is to call them and find out.
Dave is correct. You can’t get a copy of old software from Adobe.
Bob
however if you have all the serials etc. you MIGHT be able to buy some "backup software" (first time I’ve ever seen a legitimate use for this stuff) or a v6 off ebay. Note that the SW you buy will likely be either pirated or something someone upgraded off of (also illegal to use) BUT the caveat is you NEED TO USE YOUR EXISTING VALID LEGAL serial #. All you need to do is get the media. Discard any serial # you get…
goto amazon.com search for photoshop 6 and look at the featured links section on the search return page. you’ll see 2 for "backup software" companies. I guess that’s how they stay "quasi-legal".
not sure if the hosts will delete or edit this or not. I’m not condoning piracy. I leave it up to Len and Bob’s discression.
dave
But again, if the software was registered, I think Adobe would help out with the install of the upgrade.
Bob
bob, but he doesn’t have the media, it’s cracked. note that i was responding to m harnett, not the O/P: cb11.
Maybe you shouldn’t use the term ‘cracked’ š

So was I. As long as the software is registered, I think, but don’t know, that Adobe would be able to help. Same type of thing as if they had PS 3.0 and wanted to upgrade to CS.
The CS media won’t recognize 3.0, but Adobe can walk you through special installation instructions.
Bob
but don’t know, that Adobe would be able to help.
right. but he need (or wants) his old verison back, 5.5. I didn’t see him mention anything about upgrading. adobe can’t sell him that, but he can get a backup copy and use his valid serial # when installing it.
If he registered it, Adobe would have a record of it. I’m pretty sure they’d help him install a CS upgrade without the earlier media.
I’d feel a lot better about him doing that then buying one of those back up copies. So, to m harnett…call Adobe and get the scoop.
Bob
I’m pretty sure they’d help him install a CS upgrade without the earlier media.
i’m sure they would too, but that’s not what he asked. he wants 5.5 back, from my reading of it.
Hmmm, well as the Rolling Stones so aptly put it…you can’t always get what you want. š
Bob
But you can try sometimes and you just might find you get what you need.
You guys are great. I really do appreciate your input and supportive help on this` and IĀm sure that there are others feel the same way.
I’ll try Adobe, next week, and get back to you on this issue.
I’d really like to re-install the my v5.5, but would not mind upgrading, if that were not so costly. I’ve purchased and been quite satisfied with v5.5 for some time.
Why are we being so controlled by the corporate structures (MS primarily) to always buy their new software before they complete the prior version? I realize the Adobe does not fall into the same tank with MS, but the trend is set and all lively competitors tend to keep up, or drawn. Adobe has been fairly good about supporting their clients.
If nothing else, you’ve learned to always make a backup copy and store it in a safe place. Let us know how you make out with Adobe. I can tell you that you won’t get a copy of 5.5 from them.
Bob

then go to cs! you can get it for around 160 bux. you don’t need to buy any versions in between. you won’t regret it. CS is light years ahead of 5.5!!!

Good idea but if it’s protected by laser lock, safedisc or anything else you are going to need Clony XXL or some other protection detector. You will also need a CD burning app that can bypass that protection as well. If you can’t burn it with some cheap CD burning application like Easy CD Creator rub it with alcohol. š
Adobe software can easily and legally be copied for backup.
Bob
Adobe software can easily and legally be copied for backup.
That nice but I think Adobe should fix the Photoshop activation thing people are complaining about so everyone can use it and remain content with Adobe products.
For some users it’s an issue, yes. And I’m sure the engineers are trying to resolve it. But the number of people having problems are no more than are having problems with other things.
If you don’t want to buy it, don’t. But please stop making statements about something you know nothing about.
