8 bit – 16 bit?

I thought I had posted the other day to the group on subject matter but it apparently met an *event Horizon* and disappeared. So I’ll repeat ….

I load an 8 bit RAW image from my D80 into Photoshop CS 2, pull the mode window down and see the 16 bit option is highlighted. I click on it and magically my 8 bit 27 MB image turns into a 16 bit 57 MB image.

Now then. Other than 1/3 of my imaging controls are disabled in 16 bit and the doubled image size, are there any other changes to the original 8 bit image? Is the 16 bit image *twice* a deep, twice as sharp, better tonal range etc? Where DID the extra 27 MBs come from?

In none than why expand to 16 bits? Also does any digitral camera capture RAW in 16 bits? Just wondering.

A raw file captured only the filtered grayscale information from your camera’s sensor. It is your raw conversion application processes this into a full-color image. The choice of 8bit or 16 bit color depth is depending on the intent of color editing. 8 bit got 16.7 millions of colors to manipulate while 16 bit got 281 billions. 16 bit color depth prevent poterization or banding of tones better than 8 bit and if it does, off course better detail and tonal range. It depends on the kind of image you are editing. The choice is yours.

magically? it’s like magic it’s real as long as you believe it….

Have you ever tried to scale up an image of
20px x 20px at 96 ppi and turn it magically into a huge 300 px x 200 px at 600 ppi?
Is it added details?
If your image is first in 27 Mb 8 bits, transforming it in 57 Mb 16 bits won’t add no details and deph because they weren’t in the ORIGINAL image, but if your camera is able to shoot at more than 8 bits try it and you’ll see it will…
