Photoshop CS2 locks up!

I am using Photoshop CS2 under windows XP SP2, 2GB of memory and a AMD 3200+ CPU. As I am using Photoshop at any time the application will lock. The only way for me to get out the mess is by Shutting down the comptuer and turn it back on again.

Someone suggested that I turn off everything that runs in the background. I am not comfortable with that suggestion since that would mean turning off ZoneAlarm, Spyware doctor and Spyware Sweeper.

It did appear to work better than before BUT I don’t want to run the machine with my pants down (if you know what I mean).

Has anyone else had this problem?

Any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Cheers!

Is that all that is running upon start up, or do you have other programs also start up. I usually just have my virus stuff running and no other programs at all…. if you find yourself still locking up, you may want to consider adding more ram if possible.

I was just thinking about adding more memory. It won’t cost too much, what do I have to lose? I have 2GB now how much additional memory does CS2 need?? NOW that I have read the system requirements on the box it appears that a dual core processor would be nice…

Cheers!

ZoneAlarm has been known to cause similar problems. Can’t understand your reluctance to turn it off. If you are using Photoshop and no other software why would you want to maintain an Internet connection?

If you don’t at least try the advice given then you are reducing the chances of solving your problem.

When I was running Photoshop 7 I was able to have all applications on my computer running simultaneously. Now that I’m running Photoshop CS2 it is suggested that I turn off applications that are running in the background. I don’t have a problem with that if it means of solving the problem. Or at least coming to some conclusion.

I do believe that all of my applications should be able to run as they were when I was using Photoshop 7. Think about it Adobe comes out with software, wonderful software but in order for us to use it we have to turn off several other applications in order to experience the full effect. I wonder how long Adobe would be in business…

Okay Okay, I shut off all of the applications that were running in the background. Photoshop CS2 was running a little better not great but a little better. My machine still locks but if I’d wait I’m able to proceed as usual. I think that even though I have 2 GB of memory which my machine is hardly using a new CPU is needed

What I have discovered just by reading the system requirements on the box that Photoshop CS2 was delivered in (I didn’t read it before) is one of the first items on the list which is a Xeon dual followed by a Intel Centrino or a Pentium three or four processor. What that tells me is to get the best performance out of of Photoshop CS2 it’s probably a good idea to have a dual core processor.

I really am interested in all comments, please lets talk!

Again thanks KM!

Hello!

Forgive me for my bad English.
I collided with similar situations.
I assume 3 possible problems.

1. The conflict to drivers of a videocard. Try to load the latest drivers.

2. An overheat of the processor and/or a videocard.
It’s necessary to replace a layer of heat-conducting paste between the processor and a heel of a CPU cooler. Check cooler on videocard. Put the additional fan in the case.

3. Damage of Photoshop.
Reinstall the program, use Service Pack 1 for Photoshop CS2. BR,

CS 2 is a hungrier beast than PS7, a lot more in the overhead department. Nothing wrong with using AMD processors, I’ve used nothing but since 1993, It’s just that they won’t pay Adobe to go on the recommended hardware list. What are you doing when CS2 locks up, is it the same thing all the time or different actions. What’s your scratch disk setup? How much space do you have on your hard drive? How many history states are you supporting? (edit>preferences>general)

Hello Mike!

Thank you for the reality check! The application locks sometimes when I am using Adobe Bridge just to view an image. Sometimes the application will lock when I am editing an image. I am using the default (?) number of history states which is twenty.
My scratch disk setup is Startup and drive F. Photoshop is loaded on the C drive.
I just installed the lastest update to Photoshop CS2, 9.0.2. I am not sure what this update is for but I hope it will reduce the number of lockups I am having.

I love AMD products! As soon as I return from my Photoshop CS2 class next week I am going to pickup the AMD 4800+ S939. I will pop out the old CPU and drop in the new one. What is another 300 bucks? 🙁

Thanks Mike!

Hello Stanislav!

1. I have updated the drivers to the videocard.
2. I don’t think that the CPU is over heating. The temperture stays around 100F/38C
3. Have not reinstalled Photoshop. I will see how the change I have made affects my system. I hope for the best! Keep your fingers cross and THANKS!!

You do not need more RAM, you have more than enough.
Regardless of what you read many motherboards have difficulty handling more than 2GBs of memory and many will behave aberrantly when more than the 2 dual rate slots are filled.
If you had hardware memory problems you would see the BSOD/OS freeze and not a program freeze and you would see it randomly no matter what you were doing. The same for a failing hard drive.
Overheating causes the BSOD/OS freeze, not a simple program freeze. An Athlon 3200 is fast enough: I run CS2 on such a machine and it is not that much slower than my dual core computer (AMD 4600 dual core–compare the clock speeds of your processor and the 939 AMD dual cores). Very little of CS2 is dual threaded and there is very little productivity gained with a dual core processor, other things being held equal. However CS3 is supposed to have real dual threaded processes throughout the program. CS2 has stability issues that are aggravated by the peculiarities of a particular computer’s hardware/software combinations. CS2 is worse than CS which was worse than 7. This is an aspect of what is commonly called code bloat. In truth the way XP (and Mac OSes) handle memory and track what programs are doing is part of the problem.
If you have several large files open and are cutting, pasting or applying complex filters CS2 can run short of OS resources and CS2 behaves aberrantly. This will range from cursors that no longer work to the complete program freeze. Some apparent program freezes are not really freezes, even if task manager reports the program is not responding: it is really performing a complex operation at the limits of your hardware/software resources and will eventually come around. It pays to wait rather than lose the image you are working on.
Resources are software and not hardware memory pointers so adding more RAM will do nothing.
Zone Alarm does not affect CS2 except when it phones home to upgrade. However some antivirus programs affect everything (norton is the worst, McAffee slightly less worse). You do not need an antivirus program running if you are using PS and not downloading from the internet. Keep the firewall on: Zone Alarm is far superior to the XP firewall. However it is more likely it is other background programs and not the antivirus program causing problems.
Run your antispyware to see if that improves things.
But you do not need to run antispyware in the background with Photoshop: shut it all off. This suggests you probably have a slew of crud loading at start up and need to learn to clean up your Startup folder and the startup section of MSCONFIG. All those background processes are using up resources. For example the ubiquitous Adobe PFD reader does not need to load at startup.
You also may need to optimize PS settings with regard to memory priority and the way swap files are set up.
It cannot hurt to upgrade your video driver as another program installation may have corrupted some aspect of the driver. ATI and Nvidia upgrades are tunings for specific 3d games and not programs like Photoshop as the drivers are very mature for general computer use. It would also not hurt, but may not help, to defragment your hard drives.

Rather a definitive response.

I have assisted someone resolve problems with Photoshop that directly related to the presence of ZoneAlarm.

I can’t recall the version of ZoneAlarm but it was installed on a new system prior to the installation of Photoshop. The Computer was used purely to run that PS.

The very first running of Photoshop caused a Shut Down when a layer style was applied. This happened after three complete reinstalls of everything, including the WinXP Operating System. It was only after a new install without ZoneAlarm that Photoshop ran without further interruption.
